Motivational messages create smiles, lift self-esteem

Walking into the smelly bathroom at 7 a.m. while tired and sleepy might not seem like the most exciting activity to many students, but lately many girls at CHS are making time for an unnecessary trip to the bathroom to see the colorful and inspirational sticky notes that are posted on the mirrors.
Two CHS students, Juliette* and Olivia*, recently started sticking  notes on mirrors in the girls bathrooms that say: “Smile You Are Beautiful!” The girls asked to remain anonymous to be able to hear people’s unbiased and honest opinions about their notes.
Juliette and Olivia began posting the notes last month and since then, many female students have become infatuated with the bright sticky notes. Not only do they add color to the bathrooms, but they also aim to boost girls’ morale and confidence.
“Girls our age are so self-conscious,” Olivia said. “Society tells us that we need to wear make-up to look good, but in reality we’re beautiful human beings who deserve to show who we are.”
According to Juliette, she realized that posting sticky notes was a small, but meaningful way to change the way people looked at the world.
Senior Priya Khatta remembers walking into the bathroom and automatically smiling at the sight of the dazzling sticky notes.
“It makes my day when I leave class [and] go into the bathroom,” Khatta said.  “It brightens my mood.”
Freshman Tara Lattimer loves walking into the bathroom to find the vivid messages carefully placed on the mirrors.
“They’re for everyone,” Lattimer said. “They aren’t on a specific mirror or for a specific person, [so they] make everyone feel good.”
Since so many girls like the notes, some have started to question if the boys would appreciate a burst of color on their bathroom walls.
“Boys don’t spend as much time in the bathroom that much,” senior Curtis Milkman said. “But, if a guy was to write them, they would say ‘You’re a stud’ or something of that nature.”
Juliette and Olivia don’t want to change the world in the blink of an eye, they just want to make people feel better one sticky note at a time.
“We hope that it’ll make people’s days better and that it might restore the confidence of the girls at [CHS],” Olivia said. “It’s a bigger thing than just sticky notes on mirrors.”
The idea of brightening teenage girls’ days with sticky notes is not unique to CHS. The organization Operation Beautiful helps girls with self -esteem issues and currently has about 7,000 pictures, notes and quotes posted on their web site. Many of the pictures are of notes with messages similar to Juliette and Olivia’s.
Although Juliette and Olivia are not affiliated with the group, the website encourages girls to take pictures of the notes and upload them to the website to support fellow girls in the battle against low self-esteem. The website commends girls who take the time to make others feel good.
“I think it makes people smile when they realize how much goodness there is in the world,” Operation Beautiful’s founder Caitlin Boyle said. “People place these notes in locations where negative self-talk often occurs, such as the bathroom mirror, the scale or the changing room at the gym. The idea that someone would do this for a stranger is so uplifting.”
