Phenomenal, great and masterpiece are just a few of the words that can be used to describe the third season of “Jujutsu Kaisen.” Season Three of “Jujutsu Kaisen” was released on Jan. 8 and has received critical acclaim for a variety of reasons, such as the extensive character development it brought to the screen and its portrayal of significant arcs in the story, but it was primarily met with overwhelmingly positive feedback due to the revolutionary animation that was utilized in each and every aspect of the season.
“Jujutsu Kaisen” is already one of, if not the biggest, “new-gen” anime. The franchise has millions of supporters as a result of its best-selling manga and very successful first two seasons. On top of that, the season was undoubtedly among the most highly anticipated anime of 2026, and with such a great amount of hype built up around its release, much was expected from this season. To the delight of fans, Season Three lived up to the buzz that surrounded it and showcased a new, captivating style of animation.
The character development displayed in this season was remarkable. It really delved deep into the gradual shifts in the mindset of characters who have long since been a part of the series, resulting from prior events as well as interactions with new arrivals. The season further draws upon this change in sentiments as the characters are forced into precarious situations where their mental fortitude is tested. To put it simply, the season highlights the mental and idealistic growth of characters.
The brain is not the only thing being tested, however, as the physical aspect of this season was prominent. In the various battles throughout the season, the audience was given the opportunity to witness well-choreographed, intense combat between characters in the season, and with the variety of techniques used by characters, these fights truly were captivating. In addition, these clashes showed how characters tapped into their latent strength while also revealing the sheer power of fresh faces. But in all honesty, if there was one thing that made the conflicts interesting, it was the fact that they were each animated with avant-garde styles that made them incredibly visually appealing.
The animation in Season Three was noticeably different from the previous seasons of JJK (Jujutsu Kaisen). This was a direct result of the new, experimental style created by studio MAPPA, the animation studio behind the production of JJK. The style features unique red character outlines, numerous impact frames for battles and high-level rotoscoping for that fresh look. The signature MAPPA art style has left fans breathless because of its distinct look, creating a stark contrast to the many animated series that rely on recycled styles, instead of embracing the visual depth that could certainly elevate their series. This cutting-edge approach to animation has the bounds to shape the future of animation, leading to more complex, original forms, as can already be seen with other anime that have adopted techniques similar to those of JJK Season Three like Fate/Strange Fake, for example.
The season was full of wonders, but the one that truly stood out was the season finale, titled “Sendai Colony,” which received the highest IMDb rating of all time for any anime show at a stunning 9.9/10. The episode showcased the fierce battle between Jujutsu prodigy Yuta Okkotsu and two reincarnated sorcerers of old. This episode was mainly so successful since it provided insight into one of the most powerful characters in the entire series, giving the audience a visceral experience they are sure to remember. The episode, without a doubt, provided one of the best animated battles in history.
Overall, Season Three of JJK was a blessing for fans of the first two seasons. It builds off of the raw and fast-paced nature of the first two seasons while also incorporating new elements into the series. Great character development, impressive contests of awakened abilities and innovative animation, Season Three proved to be wondrous. It is rewarding to see directors put so much effort into the production of a show, and the effects of this are wildly apparent. “Jujutsu Kaisen” Season Three has rewritten what can be expected from animation studios worldwide and is certainly at the pinnacle of present-day anime.
