The annual Met Gala is one of the biggest events in the fashion industry, with celebrities flying in from all over the globe to New York City just to attend. It serves as a showcase for creative and daring designs. Every year, celebrities embrace the theme of the night and wear controversial outfits that capture the attention of the media and the public. Every piece of clothing worn at the Met Gala has the potential to set new trends that will influence the fashion industry for years to come.
The Met Gala was established in 1948, originally starting out as a midnight dinner where entry was only $50 per person. Now, an invitation can only be received through a personal invitation or a significant donation to the cause. Over the years, it has turned into a globally recognized event where tons of celebrities pay thousands of dollars to attend. The Met Gala is held every year in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, usually during early May. The actual event is a fundraising benefit for the museum’s “Costume Institute” department, and all proceeds made directly fund the department. A variety of celebrities pay to attend the gala and donate tons of money to the fundraiser. The event brings in tons of press and money, and usually only the most A-list celebrities are able to attend.
Despite the glamour of the evening, many people protest the event due to how out of touch it seems. Tons of people argue that the display of excessive wealth such as the million dollar outfits and incredibly expensive entry is unnecessary. Some view the event as an opportunity for celebrities to flaunt their wealth. Especially because during these times, tons of people are struggling financially and are economically unstable. Still, the event remains a highly viewed spectacle no matter what arguments spectators have made over the years.
Every year the Met Gala has a specific theme for the night which serves as a guide and dress code. The theme secures media attention and allows for celebrities to express themselves through their fashion and art. This year the theme was “Fashion is Art.” Attendees stepped up to the plate in different portrayals of the theme, with some taking inspiration from legendary artwork or even dressing as characters from those pieces. This year’s theme highlights individual creativity but also emphasizes wider perspectives about the role of fashion as a form of expression. Each theme helps to tell a story, and throughout the years they have unintentionally reflected global fashion trends and set them for future years to come.
This year, Emma Chamberlain, a celebrated fashion icon and internet personality, captivated the public with her tribute to Van Gogh’s “Starry Nights.” Chamberlain came dressed in a stunning gown made up of the different shades of blue, yellow and orange that are found in the masterpiece. Her outfit perfectly illustrated the way the paint reflects on the canvas of “Starry Nights,” showing the careful attention to detail and transforming her into a walking piece of artwork.
Similarly, Rachel Ziegler came dressed as Lady Grey from the painting “The Execution of Lady Grey.” She wore a white blindfold along with a simple white dress to represent Lady Grey being blindfolded in the painting. While Chamberlain’s outfit focused on capturing the beauty of the painting, Zeigler’s outfit was more intended to give a public statement. In ways like this, many celebrities took the theme “Fashion is Art” as a way to directly act out paintings or relay messages through their artistic choices and outfits.
Overall, the Met Gala serves as a great source of inspiration for all the young artists and designers at WCHS. The event highlights the connection between clothing and storytelling, while also showing the youth how an outfit can depict a statement. The Met Gala encourages young viewers to embrace their more unique perspectives and understand the power of design as a form of self-expression. It prompts them to think outside of the box and explore fashion on a deeper level. What may seem like a simple fundraiser is actually an event for celebrities to express themselves through art and inspire the upcoming world of fashion for years to come.
