Unique, frozen attraction returns for a second year

For the second year the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center will offer ICE!, an attraction with sculptures and slides made completely out of ice. This year, the theme is Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and various scenes from the book will displayed.
The 15,000 square foot exhibit, contains two million pounds of ice.  ICE! opened on Nov. 18 and will remain open until Jan. 9.
“As guests walk through the attraction, it will be like they are walking through the various pages of the storybook,” said Amie Gorrell, director of public relations for the Gaylord National.

In order to make this intricate display, ice-carvers were hired from Harbin, China, home of the world famous Snow and Ice Festival, in which massive buildings, sculptures and slides are displayed.
“Forty ice carvers are selected from among many who apply for the chance to come to the United States for one month to build our ICE! attraction,” Gorrell said.

The Gaylord also brings in three kinds of specially-produced ice, each with a specific purpose.
This year, the scenes include the Grinch’s frozen lair, the Grinch creating his sled with his dog Max and the Roast-Beast Feast. There are also four slides, both two stories high, for attendees to race down.
“The most complex and labor-intensive structures to build inside the attraction are the ice slides,” Gorrell said. “They take nearly 30 days to complete and more than 1,000 man hours with four ice carvers working on them non-stop.”
ICE! also offers an ice-skating rink made of green ice.
