Girls lacrosse continues its undefeated season

The girls lacrosse team continued its overwhelming 11-game winning streak by beating rival Walter Johnson, 9-5, May 4.

Four goals were scored by junior Madelyn Flax, three by junior Mairin Hall, and senior Katie Ruben and sophomore Bailey Boyland chipped in with one apiece. The midfield stepped up with constant pressure along with a large margined victory in ground balls and turnovers.

“Before the game the captains got the team really pumped up and we came out extremely focused,” junior midfielder Eliza Farha said. “We just worked really well together as a team.”

The great defense, along with key saves by junior goalie Kristina Roberts, helped keep the Bulldogs as the number one seed in 4A division with five saves.

CHS beat the previously undefeated Damascus, 17-7, May 2. Multi-goal performances from junior Mairin Hall, who had just come back from a two-week ankle injury, senior Katie Ruben and junior Madelyn Flax, who have combined for 145 goals this season, helped lift the Bulldogs to victory in the battle of the undefeated.

Previously the CHS girls lacrosse team maintained first place in the division by steamrolling the Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles, 22-8, and the Gaithersburg Trojans, 19-7, April 11.

“I think we played extremely well and showed how our offense is not reliant on just one person,” Fox said.

Although the game did not count as a league match, it served as the eighth consecutive win after having tied Columbia’s Atholton High School, 9-9, May 9.

The girls had previously beat Northwest HS by a score of 18-8, in which the defense, led by junior Colby Ranck, senior Sami Soma and freshman Carly Shapiro, held the opponent to single digit goals and caused many turnovers, giving the offense more time and opportunities.

“It was good to be able to hold them defensively because it relieved some pressure from the offense,” Ranck said. “Without the pressure of having to score, the offense played much more relaxed and efficient.”
