Girls soccer’s strong record shuts out competition

The girls soccer team extended its winning streak to six games Oct. 15 when it defeated Sherwood 4-0 at home and improved the team record to 7-1-1. The Lady Bulldogs have not seen defeat since their loss to Walter Johnson Sept. 20.

At the end of the first half, the score was tied at 0-0, but CHS came out scoring all four of their goals in the second half. Senior captain Alexis Shay and junior captain Jenna Cantor each scored two goals.

“It was frustrating in the first half since Sherwood was playing a really weird offsides trap,” head coach Haroot Hakopian said. “We were caught offsides 11 times in the first half. They were playing physical, but in the second half we played how we do.”

CHS defeated rival Wootton Oct. 13, 2-0. Once again, the score at halftime was 0-0. However, with 25 minutes left in the second half, Shay shot the ball past the Patriots goalkeeper, off the post and into the back of the net.

Then with 13 minutes left in the game senior Lara Lieberman scored and extended the Bulldog’s lead to two goals. Both goals in the game were assisted by junior Colby Ranck.

“[The] goals were two of the prettiest goals [for us] all season,” Hakopian said. “If we keep working the ball around, playing the ball wide and taking shots then we will score.”

Even though CHS had possession for most of the game, they did not get many scoring chances. When they finally got one, they took advantage of it.

“We played really well, and we were organized the whole time,” senior captain Rachel Marincola said. “We were in much better shape than them, so by the end of the game they were really exhausted.”

CHS also defeated Clarksburg, Oct. 6, 5-0 as the Bulldogs scored all of their goals in the first half. Both Shay and Cantor scored two goals each while sophomore Zoe Forster scored on a penalty kick.
