MCPS’ second winter break, filled with endless snow days, was all fun and games at the time. However, staff and most students geared up for the makeup days that were expected to be added onto the end of the school year. The only people who thought they could get out of it: seniors. In an unprecedented move, this ended up not being the case.
“Unfortunately unlike what all seniors thought, they just as all other grades will have to make up for their missed days which will ultimately push graduation back,” WCHS snow coordinator Frosty Snowbottom said.
This extension to seniors’ school year creates a fragmented ending, allowing for a temporary break at the initial time senior year was supposed to end, and picking back up a week later for an extra 5 days of school. This ultimately pushes graduation back for a whole week past the initial June 1 date.
“It really sucks that we have to go back to school for a whole week, especially with the weird break in between our extended year,” WCHS senior Summer Vacation said. “I was really excited for summer and have already made all my summer plans, which will now be completely messed up.”
WCHS seniors have started a petition at NoMoreSchool.com, where they are petitioning to go back to the traditional senior school year ending. While this has been extremely successful so far, reaching slightly over 500 signatures, the school has yet to take action.
“We understand the disappointment many seniors may face,” Snowbottom said. “But seniors need to remember to end the year strong no matter the circumstances.”
