The air in the WCHS hallway grew thick as a patch of darkness that seemed heavier than the rest roamed the hallways after hours. Students at WCHS have recently reported a strange new and eerie presence roaming the school halls: the ghost of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Rumors began circulating earlier this week when several students staying after school for sports practices and clubs reported hearing footsteps echoing through empty hallways. Others claim to have seen a short figure in a dark suit pacing in the history hallway while muttering phrases about war strategies and perseverance.
“I looked up and saw a strange, older man in a dark suit staring at my homework that I was trying to finish before practice,” WCHS sophomore Maya Patel said. “He told me that my notes about World War II were mostly correct, but not quite. He crossed out one sentence and rewrote it with a slight bias toward Winston Churchill. Then he complained that cafeteria tea was ‘deeply disappointing’ before walking straight though the wall!
Teachers have also taken notice of unusual activity in the history department. Lessons related to World War II in APSUH and Honors US History had been altered overnight, raising suspicions as to who could have accessed these materials after school hours.
“When I opened the slides for the day, there were quotes added to every page,” APUSH teacher Henry Thompson said. “The board was also completely filled with Churchill quotes! I have no clue who could have possibly done this, but whoever did clearly knows their WWII history very well.”
Mysterious sightings have also occurred at the athletic fields. During a recent practice after school, members of the WCHS baseball team reported seeing a dark silhouette standing near the dugout watching the players warm up.
“The man in this dark suit started talking about determination and compared our upcoming game to the Battle of Britain,” WCHS baseball coach Mark Heyward said. “It was extremely odd, but also extremely interesting. Then he tipped his hat and disappeared into the distance.”
Although WCHS administration has not confirmed any abnormal activity, stories and conspiracy theories about the possible visitor continue to spread. Some students believe the ghost may be checking on the school that carries his name, while others believe he is trying to help with history homework.
“If the ghost of Winston Churchill wants to help us study, I’m honestly not complaining.” Patel said.
