New year, new movies! Even though 2020 has ended, that does not mean that the pandemic has ended with it. People should still be staying home and practicing the necessary safety precautions, but with these new 2021 movie releases coming out, staying home will be far from boring. There is much to see movie-wise, regardless of the platforms you have. To make the new year a little more bearable, here are some top-pick movie choices to look forward to in the new year.

Netflix

“Moxie”: This upcoming comedy-drama directed by Amy Poehler stars Hadley Robinson, Lauren Tsai, Josephine Langford and Patrick Schwarzenegger. Based on the novel by Jennifer Mathieu, “Moxie” follows a 16-year-old who is fed up with her school’s sexist and toxic status quo, and anonymously publishes a zine that instigates a school-wide uprising. Scheduled to be released on Mar. 3, this revolutionary coming-of-age film is not something you want to miss.

“Malcolm & Marie”: To be released on Feb. 5, this black-and-white film provides audiences with something a little different. Starring Zendaya and John David Washington, this drama tests love’s boundaries when a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) stumble into a discussion about their relationship, springing up unexpected confessions, after coming home from a celebratory movie premiere. If you enjoy a good romantic drama, “Malcolm & Marie” is sure to satisfy your craving.

HBO Max

“Godzilla vs. Kong”: This upcoming American monster film is set to be released on May 21. Some of its stars include Mille Bobby Brown, Alexander Skarsgård, Rebecca Hall and Jessica Henwick. The plot of the movie is exactly how the title sounds: Godzilla squares off against Kong with a legendary battle of the ages, while humanity looks to wipe out them both and take back the planet once and for all. This film is the sequel to “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Kong: Skull Island.”

“Dune”: This science fiction film’s cast includes some fan-favorites including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. Set in the future, Duke Leto Atreides accepts custody of the dangerous planet Dune, which is the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, “the spice.” Even though Leto knows the challenge is set by his enemies, he takes the opportunity anyway, bringing his most trusted advisors and personal relationships with him. Coming out Oct. 1, this film is certain to captivate and excite audiences with characters’ perilous adventure to another dimension.

Disney Plus

“Marvel” Pieces: Calling all MCU lovers! This year is set up to be one of the busiest in regards to Marvel content ever with twelve total shows and movies being released. “WandaVision,” “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “Black Widow” and “Hawkeye” are a handful of pieces that are to be showcased on Disney Plus this year. “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” and “Loki” are must-sees with their plots following events after “Avengers: Endgame.” If you have enjoyed previous Marvel content, the new twelve Marvel pieces that are to be released this year are definitely something to look out for.

“Star Wars”: Marvel is not the only series set up to have an abundance of content on the way. First off, “The Mandalorian” is getting two spin-offs, which consist of “Rangers of the New Republic” and “Ashoka Tano”, who is finally getting her own series, both set to debut in Dec. Multiple animated films are also on the way including “The Bad Batch,” “Vision” and a C-3PO and R2-D2 spin-off titled “A Droid’s Story. None of these have set release dates, but are all scheduled to premiere sometime this year.

2021 is set up to have numerous binge-worthy films  no matter what streaming platform you own. Whether you like comedy, drama, action or a little romance, this year’s upcoming movie releases have it all, so grab a bowl of popcorn, get comfortable and enjoy!
