Girls Tennis cruises through first five games

The girls tennis team expects to continue its invincible play and improve on last year’s 11-1 record, after starting off the season with five wins and no losses.
The girls won their first five games all by a score of 7-0, and in the first four matches, the team did not lose a single set.
“We have been working really hard and our hard work has paid off,” junior Lauren Pinsky said.
The team began its season with flawless performances in all five matches from senior captains Robyn Baird, Maggie Yiin and Joanne Liu.
“The captains have been winning all [of] their matches and have been great motivators for the team,” junior Leila Islam said.
Pinsky, who has been the top singles player on the team for the last two years, has made the captains’ jobs much easier by going undefeated thus far and taking on a leadership role herself.
“She has really built up her confidence and knows what to expect for each match,” junior Danielle Mandir said. “She has been practicing really hard and has definitely been going the extra mile. She has started making fitness groups for us on weekends.”
The Lady Bulldogs started off the season at Sherwood Sept. 4, where they swept all matches and won 7-0.
“Everybody [stepped up] and worked together hard,” coach Benjamin Woods said. “[They] all practice hard and come ready to play.”
Mandir and fellow junior Ashley Lin have also helped start the season off strong with threeshutout games against Sherwood, Quince Orchard and Einstein.
“We lost eight seniors last year,” Islam said. “This year we have to work extra hard to keep our title of county champion. The team is really unified and the captains this year have been trying really hard to keep the team organized.”
During the shutout win against Quince Orchard, Mandir was unable to play, and Lin took the number three slot. Islam filled the number four singles spot.
“Some people really stepped up this game because we missed one person in our line-up,” Baird said. “We had to make an adjustment.”
Although games against the Montgomery County powers, Whitman and Wootton come later in the season, the team easily defeated the weaker opponents on the schedule just as expected.
“So far we have only played teams not as strong [as us], but at practice we think of the games that mean a lot,” Yiin said. “If we continue to work hard and prepare then we will definitely take Whitman and Wootton.”
On Sept. 24, the team will face B-CC, hoping to maintain its undefeated record, followed by a Sept. 26 game against Seneca Valley.
