Boys lacrosse team upset by archrival

The boys lacrosse team ended its season May 9 with a disappointing loss to rival Whitman 11-7. The month started off well with a 6-5 win against Gaithersburg May 1, however, the scheduled season finale against Quince Orchard was cancelled due to rain, making the Bulldogs’ final regular season record stand at 8-3.

“I am extremely proud of what this team accomplished this year,” coach Jeffrey Fritz said. “We fell a little short of our goals but it was an excellent team effort.”

CHS received the fourth seed in the West division bracket of the state tournament. The first round of the county bracket fell with CHS playing Whitman, a team they beat 10-3 in the regular season. Although CHS beat Whitman handily in the last matchup, the players knew they could not underestimate their opponents when they played in the playoffs.

“Even though we beat [Whitman] the first time, we knew we had to play our best game to make it past them in the playoffs,” junior Matthew Bank said.

Whitman, however outplayed CHS throughout the game due to a mixture of poor play and miscommunication by the Bulldogs.

The team will lose seniors Griffin Farha, Eric Spies, Parker Middel, Michael Mutryn, Scott Manela, Michael Bensimon, Alex Koutras, Chris Pedraza and Andrew Matthews to graduation this year.

“Losing [everyone] will be tough,” junior Jake Dockser said. “But I have real faith in not only kids in our grade, but also the kids coming onto the team from JV and middle school.”
