D.C. restaurant offers delicious food, ping pong

In a city known for its historic monuments, political figures and excessive traffic, a local hidden gem is waiting to be found.

Comet Ping Pong, located at 5037 Connecticut Avenue in Washington D.C., is a true one-of-a-kind pizza experience, so much so that it was featured on Food Network’s, Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.

Upon entering the restaurant, it is clear that Comet Ping Pong is not just about serving pizza.  The walls are works of art, the tables mimic ping pong tables, a huge television screen  hangs over the front door and an entire back room is for playing ping pong.

The menu features many creative pizzas, as well as make-your-own pizza creations.  While the typical pizza toppings are offered, unique items such as oysters and exotic mushrooms with smoky cheeses are also available.

The starters menu, where calzones and elaborate salads are offered, is huge as well. Ice cream in many flavors is on hand for dessert.

A room in the back of the restaurant is also dedicated to the art of playing ping pong.  Be it with a friend or a newly found partner, there are some serious games to be played, including large-scale tournaments. Seating for on-lookers and the paddles and balls are free for anyone willing to taking on the challenge of participating in this sport.

Comet Ping Pong also supports local artists and musicians. A calendar of events can be found on their website, www.cometpingpong.com.  Musical acts are featured mostly on the weekends, and the restaurant is known to be very crowded on those nights.

All Comet Ping Pong pizzas are either $13 or $14, but are not generously portioned.  The restaurant also offers gluten-free pizza options.  Reservations are usually not taken except for large parties; however, they do have a call-ahead seating option. Although Comet Ping Pong is located in Washington DC, it is only a 10.5 mile or 25 minute drive from CHS.

Comet Ping Pong receives a rating of P – pretty darn good.  Pizza that packs a punch with paddles, ping pong and performances – a perfect combination.
