The boys varsity swim and dive team conquered the state championships on Feb. 24.

This is the second year in a row that the boys have brought home a state title. They were led by captains Steven Mendley, John Nguyen and Sean Nguyen.

“Our team was very successful this year because of how big this year’s team was,” J. Nguyen said.

The boys took first place in the championships and beat Richard Montgomery, the closest follower, by 33 points. WCHS has dominated swim and dive competitions all year. The team only practices twice a week, but many of the swimmers practice additionally with their club teams or on their own.

“To know that all of the hard work that I have put in finally paid off and that we are back to back state champions feels great,” J. Nguyen said.

Although the team will lose many significant swimmers next year, they remain confident in their ability to repeat their success. The seniors, however, will leave the team on a high note, as state champions for two consecutive years.

“I’m going to miss cheering on my friends and teammates at every dual meet,” said J. Nguyen. “It was a blast being able to swim with this team this year and going undefeated last year.”
