On the 32nd of March, the Maryland Institute of Lunches & Food (MILF) came out with a survey that ranked MCPS as having the worst cafeteria food out of all the public school counties in Maryland. Furthermore, among the MCPS schools, WCHS held the worst school ranking. WCHS was found to have a rating of -30% for the nutritious quality of the lunches offered in their cafeteria. Principal John Taylor is astonished by the news and hopes that WCHS as a school can do better.
“As a high school, WCHS tries to offer healthy food to its students,” Taylor said. “Yet, this does not seem to be the case. Our vending machines are stocked full of candies and snacks. We want our students to have access to healthy foods that provide them with the nutrients they need.”
Although WCHS is a prominent high school in MCPS, maybe even the best high school, Superintendent Thomas Taylor wants to improve food across all public schools. Taylor agrees that the main issue is most likely the supply chain.
“When we don’t have enough bananas for our students, we go bananas,” Taylor said jokingly. “I know Taylor is upset about the fact that WCHS got the worst rating in all of MCPS with -30% the healthiness of their food. We are working to make things better and working with MILF to offer healthier options for our students.”
The Director of the Institute of Lunches & Food in Maryland or the DILF of MILF, wanted to comment on the recent rankings for MCPS. With over a century of experience, TJ Taylor understands that nutrition across Maryland has been constantly fluctuating.
“I have been in this field for a while,” Taylor said. “After 67 years at MILF as DILF, I work with lots of food producers and companies to ensure that Maryland students have healthy and nutritious options when it comes to their lunches. I hope every Maryland student can appreciate the hard work MILF does for them.”
It is true that MILF has done a lot for Maryland and MCPS. Yet, Taylor believes that there is still more that can be done. In the coming days, MCPS will develop ways to improve students’ lunches to have healthier options.
“It can be difficult to provide food that meats every child’s needs,” Taylor said. “Do you get it? ‘Meats’? But, we try our best to provide an array of food for our students. After receiving the data from Taylor and MILF, we will make a conscious effort to improve the food quality from now on.”
Now it is time for WCHS and MCPS to work together with MILF to create a healthier meal plan for student lunches. This plan will be taking suggestions from students and parents on how to improve the food that is offered for lunches. Taylor has already been in communication with Taylor and Taylor about the steps moving forward.
“We are ready to work together and make this county a healthier one for our students and everyone around us,” Taylor said. “So far, working with Taylor and Taylor has been great and we are seeing some progress already.”
