In a stunning and completely unexpected announcement, WCHSl has officially declared Principal John Taylor as its very own ‘Shayla,’ aligning with the viral TikTok trend. When the anonymous decision was first announced it was met with mixed reactions of confusion and excitement
“I’m honestly not surprised. If anyone at this school was going to be a Shayla, it was definitely him,” WCHS senior Isabella Grabo said.
For those living under a rock, the ‘My Shayla’ trend started when a TikTok user posted a video showcasing their ‘Shayla’; a person in their life who is the person who they can rely on and love the most. The phrase “That’s my Shayla” became a staple comment on countless videos, leading to many viral TikToks to the sound of My Shayla. As of April 1st, 2025, WCHS has its answer for who is its very own“Shayla”: Taylor.
The official announcement was made over the loudspeaker during third period, sending shockwaves through the halls. The decision to name Taylor as the Shayla of WCHS was made after careful consideration. There are some conditions to this great honor as well. Effective immediately all students must refer to him as ‘My Shayla’ at least once per interaction, and there are no exceptions.
“I saw this trend all over my For You Page, but I never expected our principal to be part of it,” WCHS senior Kailyn Sun said. “My friends and I always say it as a joke, but never thought it would become a serious thing.”
However, the decision was made, and Taylor wasted no time embracing his new title. In a school-wide email, he addressed the student body with the subject line “Your Shayla Speaks:”’ In his email, he stated that he was honored to accept this prestigious title. Now, as Taylor walks around the halls everyone yells “My Shayla”.
“There is no one else in this school who is more Shayla than Mr. Taylor,” Grabo said. “Every time I walk around the halls and I see him, I shout ‘My Shayla’ and it is so funny.”
Rumors are already circulating that Taylor will be changing his official title on the school website to “WCHS Shayla,” and some students have even begun crafting t-shirts with his face and the phrase “That’s My Shayla” across the front. Students are spreading a petition to rename the cafeteria in his honor: “The Shayla Snack Shack”.
“I think it would be great to rename every major building in our school after a different Shayla,” Sun said. “A Shayla is not only a title but an embodiment of who someone is.”
As the trend continues to spread, students wonder what this means for the future of WCHS. Will a Shayla election be held next year? Could there be multiple Shaylas? Or in true internet fashion, will everyone forget about this in two weeks? Only time will tell.
“Mr. Taylor is the only Shayla of this school and we should keep it forever,” Grabo said. “For now, one thing is certain: at WCHS, Mr. Taylor is our Shayla and there’s no going back.”
