No senior wants to leave high school with regrets or feeling unfulfilled. Everyone wants to get all of their bucket list items checked off before the last bell rings on the last day of school.

We have a checklist of some things that have become tradition at WCHS for you to ensure that your last few months, or years at WCHS, are filled with nothing but fun.

1) The Philly Cheesesteak Challenge

This tradition is one of the most intense challenges students will face at WCHS. The goal is to drive to Philadelphia, eat a delicious authentic Philly-cheesesteak, and drive back to school before the bell rings at 2:30. This is an absolute must-do for every senior before graduating.

2) Beach Week

This is another coveted tradition for seniors at WCHS, where seniors all rent houses at either one of the Delaware beaches or Ocean City with their friends and spend the week having a blast.

3) Outdoor Concerts

WCHS benefits from being so close to big concert venues like Jiffy Lube Live and Merriweather Post Pavilion that attract some of the biggest artists out there every year. Each year these venues host plenty of extremely well known artists while letting you enjoy the summer weather with your friends in the outdoor venue. Firefly Music Festival in Delaware has been a student favorite for years and continues to grow in popularity.

4) Go hike the Billy Goat Trail

Many students take our outdoor attractions for granted, with one of the most popular being the Billy Goat Trail. The accessibility to some breathtaking views is too good to pass up, so make sure you take advantage of it. The Billy Goat trail is a great way to stay active before summer, not to mention a great spot to hang out with friends.

5) Churchill Sporting Events

Each sport at WCHS is a little different than the others, but none of them should be left out when you are attending sporting events. Going to different types of games with your friends can be a blast, and is something you can do each year until you graduate and even after. Don’t be afraid to embrace the themes for each game, it can be a great way to enhance school spirit while also having fun with your friends.

6) Say “Hi” to people in the hallway that you don’t know

WCHS isn’t a small high school. With a school of about 2,200 kids, there is not way to know everyone. But, what you should keep in mind is that once you graduate, a majority of students, you are not going to see again. Be kind and make new friends, because you never know, that kid you sit next to in english class that never talks could end up being your best friend.

7) Visit Our Nation’s Capital

We are so close to such an amazing city, and yet many people don’t even think to spend time there. Taking the metro down to DC for a day can be a great experience. Whether you walk around the National Mall, go to a Nationals or Capitals game or visit museums, there are easily enough activities to have an awesome time.

8) Go to the Commonly Skipped school days.

Everyone knows that school is going to be empty the day before winter break, or the last day of school, but being the person who actually goes can result in a really fun day. A lot of teachers will leave that day to really get to know their students, and the students can get to know their teachers. It can be a fun day of hearing cool stories from your teacher and it’s definitely worth one day.

9) Have a picnic with your friends

Go to Gravelly Point, or some other park, and make a picnic for you and your friends. This is a great way to create memories with your closest friends, while also enjoying and appreciating our area. Bring a speaker, food, a frisbee and enjoy the UV rays.

10) Thank your teachers

Dedicate one lunch period to going around and thanking your teachers. It will mean more to them than you think. They are the ones who have watched you grow and mature these past years, and can give you advice you didn’t know you needed.

“I think everyone should be excited for the future but don’t forget to take in everything that’s happening around you right now,” senior Julia Greenberg said. “It’s a cliche but it does go so fast. I’m most excited to say goodbye to my teachers. It’ll be really bittersweet but so many of my teachers have seen me grow not only as a student but as a person and I think the final goodbye will be really meaningful.”

While WCHS is still just a high school, it has been the seniors home for four years. It is important to stop an take in the entire high school experience, as you can only go through it once. You will make great friends, have great teachers, and make memories to last a lifetime.

“Churchill has connected me with some of my best friends and have led to some of my best high school memories,” senior Sabrina Nustraty said. “Definitely branch out and don’t be afraid to be your own person. Work hard and focus on what is important to you, and you’ll meet the right people and enjoy the experiences.”
