The whiteboard in girls tennis coach Benjamin Woods’ software applications classroom reads “back-to-back-to-back.”
Those words say it all as the girls tennis team finished its season with a third consecutive county championship.
“The team met tremendous challenges and faced them and conquered them,” Woods said. “Overall it was a great year building up to a fantastic career that the seniors were completing and the underclassmen were starting.”
Gazette Player of the Year winner junior Lauren Pinsky was the only member of the team to qualify for states after she easily shut out Quince Orchard’s Melissa Minniti in two sets. Pinsky will be attending states in the early spring.
“I stayed focus during the match and fought hard,” Pinsky said. “It turned out to be a good match.”
In the earlier rounds of regionals, senior captain Robyn Baird, and number one doubles players and senior captains Maggie Yiin and Joanne Liu lost in the second round. Yiin and Liu were seeded fourth in the regional bracket, but lost to Damascus’ number one and two singles players partnered together.
“Regionals are extremely different from the rest of the season,” Yiin said. “During regionals, single players are allowed to partner up and become doubles team. We knew beforehand that we would have a lot of competition.”
Although the team sent all of its players to counties for the third time since 2004, the only singles player to win was Pinsky, but two out of the three doubles teams won their matches. Both Yiin and Liu and number two doubles team sophomores Jill Teitelbaum and Tanya Bagheri won in two straight sets.
“We were determined to win it for ourselves and for the team,” Teitelbaum said. “My partner and I played amazing at counties, winning in straight sets.”
The team believes that its goals of going to both division and county titles were met, but is also hoping for an equally strong performance next year. The girls will be losing four key seniors next season, but they still hope to maintain their county title.
“Although some key players will be gone next year I am sure next year’s juniors and seniors can step it up,” Yiin said. “I hope that we can make it back-to-back-to-back-to-back county champions next year.”
