After finishing the season with a mediocre 6-6 record, the postseason brought only more disappointment for the field hockey team as CHS lost to B-CC, 4-0, Oct. 29 in the first round of the playoffs.
“The team lost because we let down in the second half,” senior captain Alex Maio said. “We started the game pumped up and ready to play but we lost our fire in the second half.”
Endurance plagued the girls down the stretch. CHS kept the score within one goal of B-CC well into the second half; however, in the final 10 minutes, CHS did not match its opponent’s effort as the Bulldogs were outscored 3-0.
According to head coach Monica Malanoski, the team lost because it did not play as a team and because of a lack of communication among the players.
Even though the team lost, the players had good continuations and the defense, led by seniors Zoe Kabalac, Jenny Zaki and Jaymi Solomon, looked strong for most of the game.
“We were dominating the first 20 minutes of the first half,” freshman Jennifer Shim said. “Our whole team played great and everyone gave 100 percent.”
The outcome was not a proper reflection of the game, and the teams were more evenly matched than the scoreboard showed.
According to Maio, the team played smart and everyone gave a tremendous effort; it just was not enough to overcome the opponent’s tough play.
“This season we could have done better,” junior Sami Soma said. “[But] I think we will do really well next year because we have a lot of potential and get along really well as a team.”
The field hockey team looks forward to a strong sophomore class of players that will improve the varsity team next season. In the off-season, many girls will play indoor field hockey, condition and attend a sleep away camp during the summer to prepare for preseason.
“I think the team will be better next season because there is a lot of talent feeding into the varsity team from the strong JV team,” Malanoski said. “I look forward to seeing how they do next season.”
