As I walk into Shepard Stadium for the usual Friday night MoCo football game, I can’t help but notice the large amount of students underneath the pavilion, crowded around the snack bar.
Why are so many students at the football game if they’re just going to stand around and talk amongst themselves? As I walk toward the bleachers, the situation doesn’t get much better. I see more students standing around, not even facing the field.
The lack of fun at football games is an issue that must be solved, and as an avid football fan, I am here to offer a solution. One would think that the current undefeated team would cause fans to get excited, but unfortunately we live in Potomac, a town that does not take much interest in its high school sports.
First, the team should choose “pump-up” songs to play during timeouts while our defense is on the field. This works well at Redskins games, and it will get both our athletes and the fans more excited. When the students hear a jam come on the loud speakers they will stop their chit-chatting with a friend and start focusing on what is happening on the field.
The music at the homecoming game was a nice start, but they need to play different songs, rather than songs that would have been played at a little girl’s pop concert. Don’t get me wrong, “Zombie Nation” got the crowd pumped, but there is no need for “You Belong with Me,” by Taylor Swift at a football game. It seems that those who chose the songs to be played at the game sometimes forgot what type of event they were attending.
Halftime at games are often spent watching the CHS poms for three minutes then standing around for the other twelve. They need to start getting the fans involved during halftime.
A good idea to get the students involved during halftime would be by having them do football-type games to try to win a prize. A student trying to kick a 30-yard field goal for a free Chick-Fil-
A sandwich or throwing a football 50 yards for a free homecoming t-shirt would be a good idea.
My final idea is to establish a “super fan” club. This club would write out certain cheers to be said during games. Instead of our typical ones, these cheers would be well thought-out and clever. This should change the classic cheers that go on week after week and show our wit. We are a Blue Ribbon school after all.
I am glad to see the 7-0 start has brought some spirit to the CHS fan base, but more has to be done at the games to get all fans involved. It’s not every year a team from Potomac wins its first seven football games, so let’s make these games more enjoyable and get students excited.
