The girls tennis team finished its season with the same record as last season, a near perfect 11-1.
Though the Lady Bulldogs did not complete their goal of going undefeated this season, they still clinched a three-way tie for division champion title.
“Overall we did well,” junior Lauren Pinsky said. “We fought hard and we pulled it out with a co-champion title.”
The Bulldogs successfully avenged last year’s loss to Whitman with a 4-3 win Oct. 8. The win clinched the three-way tie with Whitman and B-CC for the division champion.
“It was really exciting to win,” junior Danielle Mandir said. “If we did not win we would have come in third for divisionals. We were the underdogs and everyone already counted us out, so it felt really good.”
Prior to clinching the division, the Lady Bulldogs picked up a flawless 7-0 win against archrival Wootton, Oct. 5. The victory came after a devastating Oct. 1 loss to county powerhouse B-CC.
“The loss against B-CC took a lot of pressure off us for the Wootton match and in the long run the win really helped us,” senior captain Robyn Baird said.
The team had not had much difficulty with B-CC in previous year, but could not duplicate that same success in the 3-4 loss.
“We came ready to play, but this has been the strongest I have ever seen B-CC in the last 10 years,” coach Benjamin Woods said. “[B-CC] came out on top. We did our best and there was nothing else we could do.”
As counties, states and regionals approach, the team continues to prepare for its postseason. The division title has boosted the team’s confidence.
“This year we did really well,” Baird said. “One of our goals was to win divisionals and accomplishing that really helped [us], but we still want to win counties and states.”
