The field hockey team heads into the playoffs with some disappointment. With a mediocre 5-6 record, the Bulldogs have yet to play their best field hockey.
“They haven’t lived up to their full potential,” coach Monica Malanoski said. “They play well as individuals, but until they realize this is a team sport, they won’t succeed.”
The Bulldogs finished the regular season on a good note against Northwest as they fought valiantly for a 4-0 Oct. 21 win. Seniors Jen Stein and Nikki Certner and freshman Jennifer Shim scored in the victory.
With a solid defense anchored by seniors Jenny Zaki, Jaymi Solomon and Zoe Kabelac, CHS has kept the team’s goal differential low.
“We have a really strong defense all around, although our record is not a good indicator of this,” Solomon said. “[During] every game the ball is mainly in our circle and the defense does a really good job preventing goals.”
According to Solomon, consistency is a weakness for the otherwise talented team. An inability to finish goal-scoring opportunities has cost CHS many games.
“Our biggest weakness is communication,” senior captain Allie Bloom said. “We don’t know where everyone else is on the field. We’ve been running a lot and working on our communication on the field. We have been working on taking corners and shooting on goal.”
Seniors Jojo Goldman and Alex Maio have made many contributions on offense, but the team has been unable to maintain consistency.
“I think that if we are able to play full out, all game long we will be more successful,” Solomon said. “We tend to let down second half and that is what has cost us many of the games.”
Despite a chaotic regular season, the Bulldogs are preparing for playoffs.
“It’s hard to say how well we will do,” Malanoski said. “If I could guarantee that they play as a team and up to their full potential, I would be very confident.”
