It appears that the minute a consumer clicks the ‘buy now’ button, the clothes just bought are already out of style. However, in a decade or two, the same clothes will return to the mainstream. Throughout the years, it has been apparent that the trends from previous generations revive themselves in different ways. In particular, the early 2000s fashion style (Y2K) has reemerged in today’s fashion, with some slight variations.
The Low Rise Jean
In the early 2000s, low-rise jeans were inescapable. Movie stars, especially the younger ones, would often walk red carpets in these jeans. Today, the low-rise style has certainly made a comeback, particularly with influencers promoting it on various social media platforms. However, low-rise jeans today are not nearly as low-rise as the Y2K variations. Previously, the jeans would sit low on the hips, whereas today they sit slightly below the belly button.
Monochromatic Matching Sets
It may not be obvious at first glance, but the matching sweatsuits that are extremely popular today are the same matching tracksuits from the 2000s, just in a different font. Tracksuits were the frequent streetwear of the early 2000s. The tracksuits were frequently made with velour, a type of fabric that resembles velvet. The “Juicy Couture” tracksuits were the most sought-after, similar to how sweatsuits by “Alo” are in high demand today. Both brands emphasize comfort paired with athleisure, making them extremely versatile.
The UGG Boot
The UGG Boot became increasingly popular throughout the early 2000s. The boot was worn by many celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Beyonce and Britney Spears, during this era. The UGG boot was previously high-rise, concealing the majority of the shin. Today, the same shoe is popular, staying true to its fuzzy interior and various colors. However, currently, it is most often found in a low-rise form: stopping right below the ankle.
The Mini Skirt
The mini-skirt was a sensation for going out in the early 2000s. Christina Aguilera and Paris Hilton were among the many who wore this type of skirt, which was widely admired. The skirts often were either plaid, denim, monochrome or ruffled. Today, the mini-skirt is still popular, however, in a different way. Monochrome mini-skirts, specifically the black mini-skirt, have become staples in going-out outfits.
Animal Print
Animal print fluctuates in terms of its popularity; however, in the early 2000s, the print was extremely popular. Specifically, leopard, zebra and snake prints could be found on numerous pieces. The prints were found on different clothes, from bottoms to outerwear. Today, the same idea of animal print is still relevant, except it is primarily leopard print that can be found on fabric patterns.
Lariat Necklaces
The lariat necklace, also known as the y-shaped necklace, has resurfaced in the past year. Throughout the Y2K era, the necklace was predominantly more chunky and larger, making it the main jewelry piece that one was wearing. Today, it is the opposite. The lariat necklaces that are worn are typically more discreet and thin, making them an addition to the jewelry stack one wears.
Naturally, there are many more parallels between the trends from the Y2K era and today’s inclinations. One thing is for sure: the previous decades helped spark the drift in the fashion movement today, making fashion a constant, recurring cycle. It is safe to say that the new piece of clothing that may not be in the mainstream currently will come back in the wave of fashion trends sooner or later.
