The #MeToo movement came into light in 2017 and has taken the world by storm ever since. With the 2018 Oscars, which included many accused men being nominated for awards, the #MeToo hashtag blew up on Twitter, and women from all parts of the country came together to speak out against the men of Hollywood.
The brave women have been receiving a lot of backlash because many people don’t believe that such well-known and admired celebrities, such as Kobe Bryant, could be capable of doing such unspeakable things. But through the speaking out of women involved in the #MeToo movement, they are showing sexual assault can happen to anyone, even to women at the top of the entertainment industry. Victims include Alyssa Milano, Jennifer Lawrence and Uma Thurman.
Women at the 75th Golden Globe Awards were called to wear all black in support of the movement and speak out about sexual harassment and assault. Their voices proved to be powerful and impactful as both the #MeToo movement and the Time’s Up movement continued into 2018, with more and more women speaking out about their experiences. The award ceremony included many women shouting out the #MeToo movement in their acceptance speeches and even some shade being thrown at accused sexual assaulters Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey.
The 2019 Oscars took place Feb. 24 and for the first time in 30 years, the award show had no host. Kevin Hart, who was originally supposed to host the 91st Academy Awards, stepped down from the role after his previous homophobic tweets resurfaced online.
According to Cosmopolitan Magazine, the reason why Hart bowed out as host was that he did not want to offend anyone who would be at the awards show.
Many accused assaulters, though not all, have received consequences for their actions. While others, including Morgan Freeman and Casey Affleck, have come out and apologized for their previous actions.
According to Time Magazine, James Franco, who was projected to win a nomination for best actor, failed to land an Oscar Nomination for “The Disaster Artist” just ten days after he was accused of sexual assault by five women.
However, many people, both men and women, are still too scared to speak out against their assaulters and as a result, many of them remain without consequences. Some of the accused also claim to be innocent and that they would never do such a thing. The #MeToo movement continues, with more celebrities than ever speaking out to try and encourage everyone to speak up.
The #MeToo movement is a powerful movement that proves to women around the world that they too can speak up about their experiences. Leaders of the movement, Tarana Burke and Alyssa Milano, have spoken up about their past experiences and in doing so, inspired millions of women around the world to speak up about their experiences.
Although some people may believe that activism is best left off the red carpet, the fact that these celebrities are using their fame and their voice to advocate for such a great cause is the main reason so many women have found the voice to finally speak out.
