Football team squeaks past WJ to remain undefeated

The football team avoided what would have been a shocking defeat at the hands of Walter Johnson Sept. 17 when they escaped with a 38-33 victory.

The Bulldogs were heavily favored coming into the game and expected to come away with a victory without any problems. It was not quite so easy.

After driving down the field on their first possession, the Bulldogs left with just three points when senior Bryan Crutchfield booted a 38-yard field goal.

WJ responded quickly though, after a long run, WJ running back senior Michael Pitsenberger punched in a two-yard run to give the Wildcats a 7-3 lead.

The remainder of the half simply consisted of CHS trading scores with WJ. A blocked punt by senior Brett Schweitzer that was recovered in the endzone by Bret Sickels regained the lead for CHS 10-7. WJ scored almost immediately when Pitsenberger sscored another touchdown, this one a 74-yard reception to steal the lead back for WJ 14-10.

When senior Alex Kantor ran in a two-yard touchdown with time winding down in the half, it seemed certain that CHS would go into the half with a 17-14 lead, but WJ struck again, this time in the form of a 57-yard touchdown pass to give WJ a 21-17 lead at the half.

CHS came out firing, seeking vegeance after a slow start. Kantor threw two touchdowns, one to junior Kyle Shilling and one to senior Brandon Swepson, as well as ran for a touchdown all in the third quarter.

WJ made things interesting though. Now trailing 38-21, Pitsenberger scored his third touchdown of the game for the Wildcats, putting the Wildcats within 11. WJ put in the final score of the game with the team’s third rushing touchdown of the game to bring the score to 38-33 which would ultimately hold up as the final.

CHS will head to Richard Montgomery Sept. 25 where they will try to continue their winning ways and improve to 4-0.
