It’s 5 p.m. on Thursday and by now most students have already finished their after-school snacks and have begun homework. But for senior Jen Fink the day has not ended quite yet.

Fink interns at the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces at the National Naval Medical Center.

She works with wounded soldiers, veterans and their families to make sure all their needs are met.

“I started volunteering through a youth program with American Red Cross and became really interested,” Fink said. “Now I run the youth program.”

According to Fink, most people do not realize that there is a naval base right on Rockville Pike.

“[It’s cool] because it bridges the gap between civilian and military life,” Fink said.

Though it is sometimes hard to balance school work and this internship, Fink would recommend it because what she does on the base is very fulfilling.

“I love [working] there,” Fink said. “There’s nothing more fulfilling than working with servicemen, so I make it work.”
