Wrestling sends top four to state tournament

After qualifying at the county meet Feb. 19-20, seniors Cody Egan and Saam Tashayyod, junior Wesley Deaver and sophomore Jake Sutton all attended the regional tournament Feb. 26 with goals of going to states.

To prepare for regionals, the team practiced differently than they did all year.

“The team and I [trained] at other schools with other teams to try to get a better workout,” Deaver said. “[We got] more experience working with other people than the usual people we practice with.”

The county meet was the first meet since the team defeated Rockville Feb 3. Snow storms canceled the team’s final match against Northwest and caused a break in the middle of the season.

“I feel like I got an upperhand because I ran and attempted to stay in shape,” Egan said. “Others might not when they aren’t required to.”

The team finished 10-3, an improvement on last season’s 7-7 record, and those who didn’t qualify for regionals showed promise for next year.

Regionals were Feb. 26 at Sherwood, where the top four from each weight class moved on to states.
