Track and Field to send 18 athletes to 4A state meet

The CHS track team made an impressive showing at the regional meet May 13-14 with the boys and girls finishing third and first respectively.

Thanks to thier performances in the regional championships, the girls sent seniors Jenna Hawk, Amirah Polite and Annie Wolf, juniors Maryam Fikri, Alex Giedd, Sophie Jacobson, Ale Martinez and Katie Wolf, sophomore Serenah Polite and freshmen Jenna Cantor and Taylor Caulk, and the boys sent seniors Sean King, Will Draffin, Pedro Alvarado, Darren Harris and Ryan Schorer, junior Sei Masuoka, and freshman Will Conway to the state meet May 22-23 at Morgan State University in Baltimore.

The team also saw success at the countywide meet May 6 with both the girls and boys teams finishing fourth. The boys team is anchored by its relays including the 4×800 relay team consisting of senior captains King and Draffin, Masuoka and Conway, which placed first in the event.

“We’ve had some really hard workouts to make us competitive at regionals,” King said.

Conway, who has worked hard to be a part of this elite squad, ran the first leg of the race. The relay team’s good chemistry has enabled Conway to excel.

“I’m feeling close with the seniors and ready to beat my PR for the 800,” Conway said.

The boys team rallied around Harris, who won the 400 meter dash against stiff competition.

According to coach Dave Warren, in recent years, that event has been a weakness.

The weather at the meet was cold and rainy, making the ground sloppy and wet.Teams huddled under tents doing all they could to keep warm and prevent slipping on the slick surfaces. The girls competed well, but the poor conditions and skilled opposition left them with a fourth place finish.

“There were a couple of incidents,” Warren said. “[We] almost lost a hurdler due to the rain.”

Despite the rain, junior Katie Wolf had a strong day, breaking school records in both the 100 and 200 Meter Dash, along with three second place finishes.

The Katie Jenkins Invitational May 2 also proved to be successful for CHS. Sophomore Ashton Trevino came in third in a quadrathalon, an event consisting of a 1500 meter run, a 400 meter dash, a discus throw and a long jump.
